Pebble sat, knees tucked under her and Gus' head resting on her knees as his ragged breaths tapped against her back. He was half curled around her. Except, it wasn't a sweet moment. Anybody could tell from the tears streaming down her face from his stall as she played with his forelock.
Gus was dying.
Her heart was shattering as she sniffled, continuing to soothe the old horse through his last moments. "It's okay Gus, baby. Let go whenever." She whispered to the grey. She had dread this day coming and was terribly broken as he gave a sigh. His panting became slower until it was gone, his big heartbeat going as well. The area was silent, Pebble shocked into being quiet. She lifted his heavvy, limp head and put her forehead to his one last time, saying goodbye as she tried to remain stoic. She was, save for the few tears sliding down her face.

Levi was all to aware of the cycle of life and death, of how you got hurt if you became attached. Perhaps that's why Levi was how he was. He was aware that their horses weren't going to last forever and had had a good life, perhaps that's why he tried not to get emotionally attached to Holly. He knew that Gus was nearing the end of his days. He also knew that Pebble would be incredibly upset over Gus's death, as she has that emotional attachment. That meant she'd go through the greiving process, and probably had already started denial.
He noticed that Pebble had been spending more and more time with Gus, so when he had finished making dinner, Levi decided that Gus's stall would be a good place to look for her to inform her. So he went on his way, and would arrive at the stables. Maybe he should check up on Holly...? He'd do that later. Levi would give over to Gus's stall, and when he looked in he could tell something was wrong. Gus was dead, and pebble was incredibly upset but trying not to show it. His face would remain mostly like normal, a little more down than usual though, and he would go over to his girlfriend and crouch down into an almost sitting position beside her. (Squatting? What's terminology?) He would reach out and attempt to wipe some of the tears off her face, not a compulsory act of cleaning, but rather trying to comfort her. "We can give him a proper Survey Corp burial if you'd like." he said. Well, as official as one can get out here. But he didn't add that into his words. Levi was trying to help, not bring back bad memories.

The arrival of Levi didn't bother her, except for when he reached forward to wipe her tears. Pebble didn't usually like things near her face and was a bit startled, lurching back a bit before leaning into his touch in an animal like attitude, which she was more animal than human at this rate. At his words, she nodded. "He deserves it. He was a better Scout than most of the people I've seen." She sniffled, continuing to softly stroke the grey fur. She swallowed roughly, shifting a bit as the scent of death overwhelmed her senses, causing her to go nose blind to the other scents. Death. It smelt... sickly sweet. She loved it but hated it at the same time. She swallowed roughly. "He was a good horse. Nobody can replace him." You never replace a companion.

She was already on her way to the stables that morning to feed Jean and reluctantly keep her eyes open for a possible, new horse now that the overo was getting old and ready to spend the rest of his lifetime retired. However, as she entered the stable, things just seemed a little... Off. At first glance she hadn't noticed that Gus wasn't visible from his stall, but she had taken it to assume he was out grazing or something. The conversation from inside the stall, though, was enough to make her turn around. Something had to be wrong.. Something had to be-
Gus. Her eyes grew wide as she saw the gray laying lifeless in his stall. She wanted to go on in there and try her best to comfort her, but Levi was already there. He was already comforting her.. She hadn't even the slightest clue what to say, but she still wouldn't leave. Instead, she remained outside of the stall to give her distance and time alone with Levi and Gus.
